My landscape journey takes us through many different parts of New Zealand, both the North and South Islands, from beaches, through forests to snow-capped mountains. I am inspired to paint a scene by a fleeting impression of light and shade, or breathtaking colour.  Colour is for me the key inspiration to paint and the glorious colours in the NZ landscape, winter and summer, spring and autumn are a reason to set up my easel. I paint my pictures in pastel as I love their texture and versatility.

Pink Ravens II
Susan Nelson
Tues 4 - Sun 23 May 2010
Opening Tues 4 May, 5-7pm

This exhibition is based on a personal exploration into cultural identity from the perspective of a 'pink' fleshed girl born in the 1970's as a third generation Canadian. The works are hybridizations of the various cultures and eras that I identify with.  I have included a Northwest Coast aboriginal flavor to some of the works as representation of a strong sense of kinship through a close relationship with the same land, what I consider to be a mutual relative.  The intended message behind this exhibition is from a place of loving connectedness toward people of today who are made up of many different cultures that are not necessarily of their ancestry.  It's a celebration of diversity and greater unity by virtue of unique internal identities, and a call for respect and inclusion for all cultures.

Most of the pieces are titled as self-portraits as they blend different aspects of my European/Canadian cultures with a layering of eras as well – from my early settler to 1970’s.

White
Erika Gajdocsi
Tues 4 - Sun 23 May 2010

Erika Gajdocsi is an emerging artist. She completed an Advanced Diploma in Art & Creativity (Level 7) at The Learning Connexion in Wellington. Erika enjoys exploring process and materiality.

In this series of work, the colour white is being investigated together with the round and rectangular shapes. Connection is made between the shapes by colourful pins enhancing the purity and cleanliness of white.

Simplicity is the key element. By keeping this series pure and simple, the viewer should feel balanced and connected and may realise that simplicity is calming and powerful at the same time.

Heart of Glass
Isla Osborne, Ingrid Carter, Frances Hanson, John Hansen
8 - 28 February 2010
In the Gallery

Heart of Glass is a collaboration between four Auckland artists, each responding to Valentines Day with questions about soul and society. This exhibition shows a diverse range of work, including lampworked jewellery, cast glass sculpture and fused drawings in glass.

Grey Lynn artist, Isla Osborne, presents a series of sketches in fused glass. She says “I returned to New Zealand after 10 years living and working in London, and have been struck by the sense of community here in Grey Lynn”. Her charming work is a comment on Valentines Day as a contemporary construction. With titles such as ‘Enough Stuff’ and ‘Who’s on the Box?’ she encourages viewers to question the commercialism that surrounds modern rituals.

Ingrid Carter, from Te Arai, melts glass to create wonderfully intricate beads that are made into exceptional jewellery. These miniature worlds are magical works of wearable art.

John and Frances Hanson are a husband and wife team based in the Eastern Bays. Although both work in glass, they use very different techniques to create their pieces. Frances is a lampworker and silversmith, using a torch to melt glass and make dramatic beads. As an art-jeweller, her pieces are unique and individual, with an emphasis on symbolic representation. In this show, the warmth of the heart is depicted in her lovely jewellery. Some people wear their heart on their sleeve, but these enchanting pieces mean you can wear your heart as a piece of jewellery.

John works with cast and fused glass on a larger scale and for this exhibition he has produced some very tactile works. ‘Broken Hearted’ invites the viewer to see it as either two parts or one, whilst ‘Home is where the Heart is’ is an evocative, multi-coloured fused glass installation.
