Life Drawing with Rachael Burke (5 week blocks)

This experimental, spontaneous and engaging course allows you to explore the human form in all its permutations. Teaching methodologies focus on creative spontaneity and free expression, encouraging students to connect with the energy of the subject in a non-analytical way. This often entails working at speed to disengage with the intellect and our tendency to anticipate an outcome. This approach results in dynamic, energetic, unbounded drawings. The course is broken into two - 5 week blocks. The first block covers mark-making, gestural and contour drawing, tonality and form, negative space, forshortening and portraiture, and is ideal for beginners. The second block is less-structured and more self-driven. Students will look at a number of contemporary artists as a source of developmental exploration of their drawing practice. Returning students are welcomed to sign up for either 5 week block. MATERIALS REQUIRED: A2/A1 sketch pad white + black/gray or brown (individual sheets are also fine). Bulldog clip; Selection of pencils: HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B. Compressed charcoal sticks; Soft pastels (white, gray, brown); Putty eraser. Vivid or sharpie + red, blue, black ball-point pen.
